Refs drunk - award first down after fumbled 3rd and long

3rd and 10 -- runner gets 7 yards and fumbles. Team on Offense recovers and you see the guy get tackled in the pile. End of quarter...next play is 1st and 10 with them retaining possession instead of punting (4th and 3 or so).

I can read the text - it says the dude recovered and somehow got 4 yards after recovery. Just wondering how much they paid the refs. I think instant replay clearly shows dude got no yardage and was no where near the first down marker.

All seriousness - I gather this is a display bug (?)

maybe this is just me but having a person post about a FUMBLE when the word fumble is in their name either makes it too funny or little ironic.

All seriousness = I always thought if the offense loses a fumble then if a defensive player recovers the play then fumbles the ball back to the offense that the offense would have new set of downs.

now I know it was the offense who had the ball and who fumbled the ball then got it back so maybe that doesn't really work in your case .

unless of course like the game forget to work in that small detail that the defense recovered the ball then turned it back over to the offense and that's why that team had 1st and 10 after that turnover of theirs.

That is my first thought as well, although it does kind of fall apart since it's not documented in the play by play. It doesn't appear to be what happened but it's possible that it did.

even though it does fall apart because it is not documented in the play by play is it possible that it did happen but didn't get documented in the play by play somehow or by a fluke chance??

Edit: Actually from the boxscore = http://mfn47.myfootballnow.com/box/398
Green Bay had 3 fumbles but didn't lose any of them and Cleveland had 2 fumbles yet lost 1.

Cleveland was on offense when the play happened awhile green bay was on defense so for the my play for it to happen green bay would have to recover the ball from Cleveland which then Cleveland would had to force Green Bay to fumble the ball (btw they didn't if you look at the fumbles/lost category on boxscore) then Cleveland would had to recover the ball .

so only thing I can think of is that the reason they got the 1st and 10 is because the runner got 7 yards then fumbled then someone else got the ball and got another 4 yards so the game must have added both totals to give them that first down.

also if that is not it then I give up on guessing what happened for this to happen.

That is what I believe happened. 3rd and 10 with a 7 yard gain from the RB before the fumble. Then a recovery and a 4 yard advancement of the fumble. 7 + 4 = 11 yards so they got past the sticks to get a new set of downs.

My issue was that the game sim looked like the RB got 7 yards, the ball was recovered but was not advanced. I assume the text is correct and is why they got the new set of downs.

But obviously worst case scenario - if this had been a playoff game and it had mattered...I think someone might lose their marmalade if this had been a pivotal drive in the game.

You might be right. If this is the case I'm not sure why the keyframes didn't get saved, but always remember that the playback is using interpolation strategies to store the data so there are occasional rendering errors. Just not usually of this magnitude.
