2017 Warthog Report

By billstein

(Realized "General" was the wrong place for this thread.)

Well, game 2 of the preseason has shown that the piglets have quite a way to go before their tusks grow in.
The play-by-play announcer seemed to be stuck in a loop, constantly calling out Warthog secondary giving up big plays over the middle, and Warthog receivers dropping wide open, would be Touchdowns.
The coaching staff has taken some of the heat upon themselves, as maybe too much emphasis was placed on the running game. Final stats make the call look even, but going into the fourth, the offense ran the ball 30 times to 13 passes, despite trailing the entire game.
Owner Bill Steinbach, when asked of the expectations for the team said, "We still have high goals. Our coaching team knows what it takes to be champions, and our players have great upside. We just have to figure out how to get the best out of them before the regular season starts."

Is the Warthog Defense showing some teeth, or is the Miami Offense this woeful this year?
The D held for -4 total yards, -33 passing yards behind 10 sacks, and allowed only 1.81 yards per rush.
And then there was the Offense, which continued to offend. The group fans have tagged the "piglets" continue to stink up the place. The largest blame continues to be placed on the receivers' shoulders, as they continue to drop wide open passes.
Can this group be turned around, or will the team be forced to find free agent stop gaps?

Week 1
In what should have been a celebration of a big win on opening day of the opening season, Warthogs coach Jonathan Forrest seemed less than happy.
"The fans call the offense 'the piglets'," he said. "The way they played today, that's an insult to young pigs."
It was the defense showing it's tusks yet again, carrying their tenacious play over from the preseason.
Let's hope they can keep it going, at least until the "piglets" find their way.

Week 2

Who is Patrick Spinner?

That's the question on the lips of Warthog fans this week.

Spinner was drafted in round 15 as a FS for the Jacksonville Jaguars, (Who's drafting strategy has been questioned), and was immediately inserted as the starter, despite lack of practice with the team.

Upon release from Jacksonville, Patrick was claimed on the waiver wire to try to bring life to the pathetic Warthogs' offensive (in more ways than one) squad.

By the end of the first quarter, fans were ready to start building a statue in front of the stadium. Two quick interceptions later, it was torn down.

From that point on, enough was done to win the game, which is better than previous contenders for the starting job had done.

The defense continued to be stellar, although they let the dogs close the gap in the fourth quarter. DC Tracey Culpepper said... "Hey, we all know Memphis has a potent offense, that can strike at any time. We had a bit of luck in our play calling, stopping key plays... but we can't relax and count on that in week seven."

Week 3

In what could have easily been a "trap game", after playing the rival Hound Dogs, facing a team that is still trying to find it's way in Tampa Bay, The Warthogs seem to have put it together... at least for 60 minutes.

The Defense was once again exceptional. Thirteen (13) sacks contributed to a net 62 yards for the Tampa offense. Eddie Cruise sailed his way to five sacks, and Angel Counts tallied four more.

In what was a surprise, the Offense looked the best it has since Bill Steinbach (owner) had dreams of something called "Cust 22".

Rookie Patrick Spinner's completion percentage was unspectacular at 59%, but those 13 completions on 22 attempts accounted for 277 yards and 4 TD's. The backfield complemented the passing game with an unprecedented (for this team) 4.34 yards/rush.

Head Coach Jon Forrest, in the post game interview said, "We always knew we drafted a **** of a lot of talent... We just don't know how long it will take to reach our peak. It's good to be winning games, and I'm proud of the guys, but we have a long way to go to reach our true potential."

In a much anticipated match up, The Warthogs exercised their Demons, so to speak, in the first ever victory over San Francisco in any league.
In an exciting, see-saw of a game, both offenses took turns making exciting plays, with the much ballyhooed Warthog defense coming through at the end. Either team could have pulled out the win at any time, but the 'Hogs just happened to have the lead when the clock read 0:00.
Since his signing just prior to the 2nd game of the season, Patrick Spinner has spun the offense around. With derogatory nicknames seemingly forgotten, the O now looks like it can keep up with pretty much any team. Nearly 1800 yards and 18 TD's in just five games seems incredible for a rookie, much less one who didn't attend training camp.
Eddie Cruise continues to lead the Defense adding 6 sacks in the game, making 22 for the season. That's almost triple the number sacks of the next most frequent sack-master, Terry Martin of GBY with 8. Add in his 40 hurries, and it's easy to see who the leader of the D is.
Next up, Memphis comes to town for the early season 2nd meeting. Despite what the odds makers are saying, you can bet this will be another slug fest, as usually happens when hounds meet hogs.

Well... That was a pleasant surprise.

A rare lopsided game between two teams that usually play close has left the Charlotte fans elated. Many fans leaving the stadium were heard chanting "We want Puff!!!", apparently referencing the "Magic Dragon" of a few decades ago. Either that, or they are hoping for the legalization of medical marijuana.
Even Bill Steinbach, the owner of the team, was heard saying... "Where the **** did we get these guys? Are they the same guys who played the preseason?"
Head Coach Jon Forrest seemed less impressed. In fact, judging by the post game interview, one might have thought they lost.
"21 of 44 passing... two interceptions?" Forrest questioned... "Fumbles and drops on offense, missed tackles and blown coverage on defense"... Those are not the stats of a good team."
The coach later softened up a bit, saying "Listen... we knew we chose to draft a young team. These guys need to realize though, that they're not going to win just because they wear the Warthog uniform. The other teams in this league are getting better every week. Continued rookie mistakes will end this run quickly, if they continue."
The gauntlet continues next week in a game against the L.A. Red Dragons, a team which previously held the number one spot in the power ratings, and is working hard to return to that spot.
The team will surely need to play at the level the coach desires, should they wish to get the victory.

It seems the Hogs' much anticipated match-up against the Red Dragons only raised one question...

"Why are the Red Dragons' colors yellow and blue?" Was something lost in the translation?

Seriously... This was THE first defensive battle of two of the top teams in this new league. If you enjoy good defense, this was a game for you.

The Dragons' coach has mentioned his choice of QB as an excuse for the loss. We'll have to see, as the season continues. Either way, they are a quality team, and we'll have to see where they go from here.
