The Coyoacan Aztecs secured a 28-10 victory over the Steelers at home on Sunday, continuing their climb in the division standings with a fourth consecutive win. Head Coach Joseph Poore’s squad improved to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in division play. The Steelers fell to 1-7 and remain mired in a four-game losing streak.

The Aztecs struck early in the opening quarter with quarterback Andrés Santillana connecting on a 3-yard touchdown pass to Alberto Aguilar at 9:09. George Cook’s extra point followed, giving the home team a 7-0 lead. Santillana and the Aztecs offense remained largely unchallenged, as they added two more touchdowns in the second quarter.

The second Aztecs touchdown came from a short 3-yard pass from Santillana to tight end Arturo Beltran at 6:33. Cook’s successful extra point extended the lead to 14-0. The Steelers responded late in the second quarter with a 30-yard passing touchdown by Timothy Babin to Johnny Buckley at 2:04. Ken Lawrence’s extra point brought the score to 14-7.

However, the Aztecs immediately capitalized on special teams with a 106-yard kickoff return touchdown by Patrick Rivera, one of the game's pivotal moments. Cook’s subsequent extra point pushed Coyoacan’s advantage to 21-7 by halftime.

In the third quarter, the Aztecs controlled the game, effectively shutting down the Steelers offense. The Aztecs relied on a balanced attack with notable rushing yards. Luis Vasquez had a productive day, amassing 90 yards on the ground and an additional 90 receiving yards. Arturo Beltran also contributed significantly with two rushing touchdowns and 72 receiving yards, showcasing the team’s versatility.

Santillana completed 24 of 37 passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns, though he threw two interceptions, which did not alter the game's outcome. The Aztecs defense dominated, recording six sacks, including three by defensive tackle Dennis McIntire, and two interceptions. The Steelers managed only one sack and forced no turnovers.

The Steelers’ lone other point came from Ken Lawrence’s field goal. The visitors struggled to convert on offense, unable to sustain drives or reach the red zone effectively. Penalties and turnovers further stalled their momentum.

With the win, the Aztecs remain in second place in their division, improving their points for and against to 136 and 118 respectively. The Steelers’ defensive and offensive struggles continue, reflected in their league-worst 82 points scored against 151 conceded.

The Aztecs’ special teams unit also played a crucial role, with Rivera’s kickoff return touchdown a highlight. Both teams saw a few injuries during the game, but all players were expected to continue in upcoming contests.

The Aztecs will look to build on this momentum as they move further into the regular season and aim for a playoff spot. Meanwhile, the Steelers seek to regroup and end their losing skid.

Overall, Joseph Poore’s team executed efficiently and leveraged their strengths on both sides of the ball to secure a comfortable victory.
