The Aztecs secured a 28-16 road victory over the Argonauts on September 23, 2063, in Week 4 of the regular season. The win improves the Aztecs’ record to 3-1 and keeps them competitive in the division, while the Argonauts fall to 1-2-1 and remain near the bottom of their division standings.
Aztecs Head Coach Joseph Poore saw his team take control primarily through a balanced offensive effort led by quarterback Andrés Santillana and running back David Foster. Santillana completed 32 of 37 passes for 246 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. Foster contributed 90 rushing yards with a touchdown and added 33 receiving yards and a receiving touchdown.
The Aztecs opened scoring early in the second quarter when Santillana connected with fullback Rubén Ortega for a one-yard touchdown. George Cook’s extra point was good, putting Coyoacan up 7-0. Later in the quarter, Foster broke through with a five-yard rushing touchdown. Cook again converted the extra point to extend the lead to 14-0.
The Argonauts, under Clayton Thompson, responded but struggled to gain momentum. Their lone touchdown came on a 62-yard pass from Gene Tsao to wide receiver Freddy Schwartz, cutting the deficit to 14-6. Thomas Buckner successfully made two field goals, a 42-yarder and a 28-yarder, narrowing the score to 14-13.
The Aztecs added a third touchdown early in the third quarter with a nine-yard scoring pass from Santillana to Foster, regaining a solid lead at 20-13. Although the Argonauts managed consistent drives, defensive and turnover issues hindered their scoring opportunities.
Defensively, the Aztecs pressured the Argonauts effectively, registering two sacks by defensive end Dennis McIntire, who also forced a key fumble in the first half. The Aztec defense recorded three fumble recoveries and one interception, helping to stifle Argonaut rally attempts. Meanwhile, the Argonauts forced three fumbles and recovered one but were unable to capitalize fully.
Penalties were a factor for the Aztecs, who were flagged five times for 60 yards, but their offensive efficiency and defensive resilience offset the disadvantages. The Argonauts were penalized twice for 11 yards.
The Aztecs’ successful balance of passing and rushing sustained drives and limited the Argonauts’ ability to convert on key downs. Both teams were flawless on third down conversions, with no attempts recorded.
This result leaves the Aztecs positioned well in the division standings, while the Argonauts will look to regroup as they fall further from playoff contention. The Aztecs’ Jay Foster and Santillana were instrumental in maintaining offensive composure throughout the contest.
Overall, the Aztecs controlled the game tempo and capitalized on critical chances to secure a decisive win at the Argonauts’ home field.
