The Aztecs did not need a pretty afternoon in Pittsburgh. They needed a stubborn one—and delivered, grinding out a 16–6 win over the Steelers with a punishing run game and a defense that kept closing the door.
George Cook got the visitors on the board with a 37-yard field goal in the first quarter. In the second, David Foster powered in from three yards out, and Cook’s extra point made it 10–0. Cook added a 36-yarder to stretch the lead to 13–0, putting the Aztecs firmly in command before Pittsburgh finally answered with a field goal just before halftime.
The scoreline was built on the ground. The Aztecs piled up 174 rushing yards on 30 carries, with Luis Vasquez leading the way with 84 yards and Foster adding 74 yards and a touchdown. Foster also contributed 54 receiving yards. Michael Peters chipped in 68 receiving yards, giving the Aztecs another way to move the chains when Pittsburgh crowded the run.
But this was no smooth cruise. Andrés Santillana threw two interceptions, and the first was a gut-punch: with the Aztecs at the Steelers’ 6-yard line, Kevin Sears picked off the pass and returned it 28 yards. Carl Torres intercepted Santillana later in the third. Pittsburgh had its opening to turn the game, but the Steelers could not turn those chances into touchdowns.
That failure belonged in large part to an Aztecs defense that made the pocket a miserable place to work. Pittsburgh managed just 16 rushing yards, and the Aztecs recorded five sacks. Dennis McIntire supplied two of them. The Steelers completed 27 of 41 passes for 155 yards, but found no end zone; Ken Lawrence’s two field goals were their only points.
Pittsburgh pulled within 13–6 with a field goal late in the third, and Foster’s fourth-quarter fumble gave the home side another reason to believe. Russell Austin recovered for the Aztecs, though, and Cook delivered the clincher: a 39-yard field goal with 2:30 remaining for the final 16–6 margin. Cook finished three-for-three on field goals.
The Aztecs were only three-for-13 on third down and gave the ball away twice through the air. They won anyway, because they ran with force, survived the mistakes and made Pittsburgh settle for scraps. At 9–3, they have the record to command attention—and this hard-edged road win showed they can take a punch without giving the game away.
