Yes the biggest gains are during training camp, but it’s also true that player gain more attributes from playing. That is, a player that plays more will develop faster (not huge but like one point more) as compared to someone who doesn’t play during the season. Is one rating point worth losing 12 games?

Also, the only way to gain position experience is to actually play. Though once you max out there isn’t an additional benefit.
