Re: Do we not have a punt exploit rule?

I go to the game log and use the f3 function to search for 'punt b'.

I oppose league rules on principle. Don't want to give admin-who-shall-not-be-named (not norm) any more excuses to act like a **** in the MFN community, or deal with a proliferation of rules with all the leagues I'm in.

However ... in this case it has become clear that there is an exploit, both on punt blocks and on the 46 Heavy 2 Deep Man play. The blockers simply haven't been picking up their assignments, so speed rushers get through. Timing is the critical attribute for punters to combat this. It can happen to 100 timing punters, but the likelihood is much lower.

The good news is, after working on it for a season and a half, we may have a fix in BETA. We've had three weeks with just one punt block, it was against a non-punter with low timing, and it came from an inside wing, not the line. If it's not solved, at least we're on the right track. Looks like this promising fix should roll-out to the leagues before our next season.

The best way to prevent it for now is with a rule or gentleman's agreement to keep light players off the line, and not use that 46 Heavy play at all. Many leagues have instituted a rule banning anyone under xxx lbs. from playing at ST Rusher (either depth chart or overrides). The ranges run from 215 to 250 lbs. 237 is a number I can live with, if we decide it is needed.

I don't subscribe to that

If we ban this play we should also ban Fl Hitch, I Formation PA FB Flat and Split Backs Normal Skinny Post Corner.

All 3 have broken coverage on the weak side WR and you need a deep weakside SF to contain those plays. There are not so many plays from the normal defensive backfield which have a deep FS and cover all 5 potential receivers. 46 Heavy 2 man deep under does just that.

Also it is a liability against the strongside run, so you are able to gameplan against it.

lets just agree on just using minimum 276 lbs from the LDE spot at the 46 Heavy. That will very rarely get a sack

Works for me.

I'm a somewhat new player, as I'm still in awest827's "Beginners Only League" - and that's where I learned about the punt issue a month or two back. In that league, we got a lesson on what the exploit is and how to counter it (use of mobile blockers). Since then, in that league, the block became a non-issue as the use of faster OL, TE's and FB's seems to cut down blocked punts by 90%. I'm only in 1 league that I am aware of that has a black letter punt block rule. Regardless, I cringe everytime I get one in any league. I've had mine blocked in some leagues, but I chalk that up to having my mobile blockers sub out for whatever reason.

If we had some rule, I wasn't aware. I apologize to Billstein and whether we have a rule or not, I'll take DB's off the punt team and accept any penalty you guys impose. In my defense, the guy who got the block only has 81 speed and that's not really the speed level that I thought reached the point of "exploit" as I have LB's significantly faster than that.

Cajunman, no punishment or anything coming, but having read this thread I have a thought about going forward. I'll post in a new thread.

Cajun's team is legit better than mine. He would have beat me without those plays. He deserves the win.
