Welcome back to a new season of Memphis Hound Dogs Football. The team will be the defending NFC South Champions and the team has higher hopes than just a division title, we would like to get a playoff win here. Well that can be more difficult than it seems. With Charlotte and Tampa Bay's owners still in and a new owner in Atlanta. It looks to be an interesting battle for the top of the National South Division.

The Dogs were not active in the Free Agent market this off season, They opted to go with the draft. Six picks in all. So without further delay, here are your new Hound Dogs.

#90 Fred Phinney MLB 6' 242 Air Force Academy He had a bad camp but he will help the linebackers. He is capable of developing into a good coverage LB.

#14 Eddy Orcutt QB 6'3" 226 Brigham Young
The young QB had a great camp and looks to be the future of this franchise. He has a solid arm and is accurate. His downside is he is not too mobile and could fumble if he gets hit. We are happy to have him on the team.

#39 Jeffery Furhman 6'1" 207 Cincinnati
This CB is quick but needs to work on his pass coverage. The speed he has is how he was picked up here in the 4th round.

#95 Donald Gates 6' 240 Louisiana State
Defensive end that is an above average pass rusher but average everywhere else. He will need to impress the coaches to make this football team.

#24 Joseph Morrow SS 6'1 224 Mississippi State
Another fast guy that needs to work on his pass defending skills.

#99 Keith Olsen SLB 6'2 268 Florida
This guy can play on both sides of the ball. He most likely will be the Hound Dogs utility man.

There you have it. Your new Dogs. They will be in action tomorrow night vs. NY Jets.

DOGS PLAY IN THE BIG CITY

The Hound Dogs finally got a chance to take a look at the new guys and see if the players from last season had a productive off season vs the New York Jets in New York City.

The Dogs used a balanced attack that gave all 3 QB's they have on their roster some reps. Robert Mazon went 8/11 for 156 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT. and a 154.36 rating, that is nice to see he is still sharp. Rookie Orcutt 8/11 for 149 yards, he had an interception and showed his inexperience. Tom Vroman 2/2 for 5 yards and 1 TD. TE Bynoe, Reuben Souders, and Hull each had TD receptions.

On the ground Nathan Hoadley had 96 yards and a TD, Perry 11/86, and Hull 11/29 yards. It was a nice effort running the football.

On defense Samuel Lindsay led in tackles with 6. DT Skiles, LDE Mc Donald, and RDE's Brown and rookie Gates each had sacks. It's nice when our front 4 can bring pressure. It gives the DB's chances to make big plays.

Next the Hound Dogs return to the Elvis Aaron Presley Memorial Dome to host Boston in what will be a good game to see just what kind of level the team is playing. No better gauge than the defending Champions.

LEAGUE CHAMPS COME TO MEMPHIS

The League Champs, Boston were the Hound Dogs guests last night for a pre season game in the Elvis Dome. The Dogs were burned on a few long plays and had a few missed tackles but did pretty well and won the game 31-24.

On offense, Mazon got the start and he got his first pick out of the way too. He went 9/14 for 186 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT. The rookie Orcutt went 10/15 187 yards.
Tight End Bynoe caught 3/75 yards, Rutherford caught 2 for 33 and a TD out of the backfield.

Sylvester, Ehmann, and Delao led the d with 4 tackles each. Delao had a QB sack and an interception he almost turned into 6. Ehmann had a pick as well.

The Boston front 4 really brought the pressure on the Memphis QB's but they were able to handle it without making any serious mistakes or getting hit. Nice job to the whole team. Even though it was just a practice game, it is still nice to get the win.

Alan Hightower was injured. Blind, rookie SLB Olsen, and MLB Phinney, also a rookie are the injured Dogs.

The team heads south to Miami for the 3rd of 4 pre season games.

HOUND DOGS INVOLVED IN SHOOTOUT IN MIAMI

The Memphis Hound Dogs walked into a shootout situation in Miami last night, eventually losing 66-63 in overtime. There was a combined total of 1,611 yards offense in the game. Miami has adopted the offensive strategy of "billyball" made famous by the Los Angeles Red Dragon owner. It has worked for Miami so far.

The Memphis coaches got a good look at QB Eddy Orcutt, and they like what they see from the young player. 17/26 for 595 yards, 6 TD, and an interception. Numbers like that will lock up the back up job for the rookie.

TE Ahern had a great game 7/277 and 3 TD's, WR Bellows 2/155, 2 TD, Hoadley, Prosser, and Vu all caught TD's.

On D, SS Joseph Lopez had 6 tackles, the rookie Donald Gates was impressive with 3 sacks. Playing like Gates did is going to make the cuts to 53 all that much more difficult here. We are happy to see the young man step up and play like he has done it before.

Ehmann and Gerald Johnson had interceptions.

The team hosts the Bangles next to finish out the pre season.

HOUND DOGS LIMP INTO REGULAR SEASON 2021

The conditioning coaches do what they can. The players aren't out there to hurt anyone on purpose.......the exception being Robert Asbury, but the Dogs have suffered quite a few injuries to start the season. Some of them quite serious.

WR Nathan Hoadley Questionable 6 weeks
C David Hake Questionable 6 wk.
DT Peter Ezell Q 6 weeks
RDE Johnathan Fink Q 4 Weeks
LB Frank Drake Probable 3 weeks
CB Hamilton probable 1 week.
FS Rollins Questionable 6 weeks

That's quite a list there to start a new season. The Hound Dogs are in Oakland to take on the newly aquired Raiders. This will be the new owners first League game and it's a shame he gets to see a diluted, but still potent Memphis team. Good Luck in the game tonight.

HOUND DOGS SHUT OUT OAKLAND 33-0

The Dogs traveled to the East Bay to take on the Oakland Raiders and their new "Al Davis". It wasn't to be for Oakland, The Dogs Robert Asbury, Josh Ehmann, and CB Gerald Johnson all dealt out some hits that were causes of 3 of the 4 Oakland fumbles. I don't think Oakland RB Keith Kelley will forget the name Rober Asbury anytime soon.

Mazon had another A+ performance. 22/25 357 yards, 3 Touchdowns and 0 picks. TE Bynoe caught 7/190 yards and a TD, Souders 1/70 1TD, Vu 1/18 and a TD.

Hull had a rushing TD and 66 yards on 13 tries. The Hound Dogs gained 114 to Oaklands 65. Nice work for the offensive unit of Memphis.

Oakland's Kelley is a good RB, The team moved the ball but had some untimely fumbles and that was all the difference.

The Dogs go to rival Atlanta next then Charlotte.

DOGS WIN IN ATLANTA

Memphis ran for 193 yards and beat Atlanta 45-28 in Atlanta last night. Hull was 14/95, 2 TD, Rutherford 11/89 1 TD.

Mazon had a good game as well 14/19 312 yards, 3 TD, and an interception. Bellows, Ahern, and Manz had TD catches.

Larry Brashear led the d with 9 tackles. CB Samuel Lindsay had 2 picks and earned "Player of the Week" honors. Congrats to him on his great performance.

The Hound Dogs now head to Charlotte to play an important early season game. Both teams are 2-0 and the lead in the division is on the line.

CHARLOTTE'S DEFENSE SHUTS DOWN MEMPHIS

Charlotte shut down the Memphis running backs and harassed Mazon all night, keeping Memphis out of the end zone for 3 Quarters.

The result.........A 41-16 win for Charlotte. The game was over at the half.

FB Adams sustained an injury in the game and will be out. The next game is in the Elvis Aaron Presley Memorial Dome against Irvine (1-2). Memphis will have to not dwell on this loss or the Anteaters will hand them another.

Come on down and support the Dogs!

WHERE IS THE HOUND DOGS DEFENSE?

The Hound Dogs have never been an elite defense. They've survived with speed and some killer hitting. The defensive unit picked a bad night to not show up in front of 88,888 fans at the EAP Memorial Dome.

They gave up 9 TD's and 871 total yards and were blown out by Irvine. The offense put up 41 points but that was not even close to keeping them in the game.

The Dogs drop their 2 straight game and are 2-2. Kansas City is next on the schedule and the Dogs defensive unit needs to look within and come to play.
