Re: Football Moguls 20th Season!

Been busy, so this feature got dropped for a bit, but we are back with more Football Moguls nostalgia! All this talk about INTs and rookie QBs is swarming the message boards and chat box, but did you remember the worst rookie QB season ever? You think Daniel McCrea is bad? Let's never forget James Woolridge! Woolrigde, who somehow played 4 seasons in the league, holds every futility record for rookie QBs ever and probably will never be eclipsed, no matter how hard billy tries.

In case you forgot, his "accomplishments" include 88 INTs in one season, his only season as a starter, for the Miami Dolphins. He had a 1 to 88 TD/INT ratio and QB rating of 0.51. Yes, less than one. He had four 10 or more INT games that season (interesting to note that the only other player in Football Moguls history to throw 10 INTs in one game is Warren Gage of the Del Fuego Phoenix). With only 90 completions the whole year, he almost had more INTs than completions! I guess it didn't help that he was sacked 93 times. But he was so bad, some speculate that as soon as he left the team, the entire franchise moved to Independence to get rids of the stench of defeat.

He did eventually develop 96 accuracy! So I guess playing that much boosted his ratings! But by then his career had been ruined. He was a beyond poor and homeless man's Nathan Peterman and his name is forever stained by his horrid rookie season. So it's interesting to note as we again debate whether it is worth it to throw a rookie QB into the fire that's not ready for primetime, to remember James Woolridge!

Billy, not everything in this league is about you. Maybe 75%, but not everything.

In Warren's "defense," he was a WR that billy put in at QB in 2031 week 10 vs. the Monarchs - not fair to have him in the "worst QB ever" discussion.

Lol. I think that was the point being made, the only other player to throw 10 INT in a game was a WR.

OK because billy complained that the last QB post wasn't about his team, we will fulfill his wish and present to you the Pennsauken Quarterback syllabus, in recognition of the release of the (spoiler alert!) greatest quarterback in Phoenix history, Jonathan Mentzer! This was inspired by an article I read (sorry Bears fans!) on the greatest Chicago QBs of the last 40 years, which concluded that Jay Cutler was the best they could muster. Without further adieu, the billyvan Pennsauken QB syllabus. Pour one out for the Phoenix fans who have had to watch these guys in action the last 10 years!

2027 - Billy takes control of the Houston Oilers and rebrands them. Incumbent QB is Robin Arroyo. That would be Arroyo's only season in Houston. 2680 yards, with 6 TDs and 16 INTs. It was no surprise that during the season, billy gave Stephen Doyle (38% completions, 1 TD, 13 INTs) and John Heidel (47% completions, 2 TDs, 7 INTs) chances to start. Billy also started old man Brian Teeple for one game where he threw 3 TDs and 1 INT with a QB rating of 101.45. This puts Teeple in the running for greatest Phoenix QB of all time. Note: none of the QBs in 2027 would ever play for Pennsauken again.

2028 - After cleaning house with the QB room, it was a new era in Pennsauken. Billy traded a second and third round pick for Jonathan Mentzer. (The second rounder would become star DT Howard James of South Brisbane). But not to be satisfied, Billy also traded for QB Cliff Harshaw, trading a first and second round pick away. (the first rounder turned out to be Ross McKibben, LB, that billy later acquired via trade). Mentzer won the starting job and threw for over 6000 yards and 41 TDs.

2029 - The "stable" era of QBs. It was Mentzer and Harshaw again, with Mentzer throwing for over 4000 yards with 25 TDs.

2030 - Not satisfied with Mentzer evidently, billy begins musical chairs at QB, with Mentzer splitting starts with Harshaw and free agent addition Eddy Orcutt. Mentzer still had the best stats, 2400 yards with 15 TDs, but did not finish the season as the starter, and Orcutt was handed a big extension. The Harshaw era ended after this season: 3300 yards, 13 TDs and 11 INTs in his career for Pennsauken. One of the Pennsauken greats at QB, somehow!

2031 - After handing a big extension to Orcutt, naturally, Billy trades LB Thomas Morales (rank 90 LB, who is still in the league) for QB David Bender. Bender is the starter for most of the year, throwing for 2700 yard 17 TDs and 21 INTs. Orcutt gets one game in and throws 1 INT, 0 TDs, and billy starts a QB that would get converted to RB and WR at QB this season in blatant tanking moves. Mentzer gets one game too, and is his usual solid self, 1 TD, 1 INT.

2032 - Billy simplifies things down to Bender to Mentzer. The two split starts and both are bad. 69 QB rating for Bender, 74 QB rating for Mentzer.

2033 - Mentzer regains the starting role, throwing for 3500 yards and 19 TDs and 20 INTs. But Bender still gets starts, 3 TDs, 3 INTs only.

2034 - Billy signs Todd Sather as his QB hero solution. Sather throws exactly 0 TDs, and 7 INTs before he is benched and guess who starts again? Jonathan Mentzer finishes out the season throwing for 3500 yards, 16 TDs and 15 INTs.

2035 - Sather retires, so billy in what might actually have been a smart move, signed former MVP Joseph Kelly as QB. Kelly proceeds to throw for 1700 yards, 7 TDs and 9 INTs before he gets benched for... wait for it... Jonathan Mentzer, who finishes out the season with one of the strongest finishes: 2600 yards, 17 TDs and only 9 INTs.

2036 - So Mentzer, coming off one of his best seasons, and Pennsauken with a pretty strong finish to the year, winning a respectable 6 games, of course billy trades for, not one, but two QBs. And Mentzer heads to the bench to watch Daniel McCrea throw 4 TDs and 25 INTs... so far. And now news comes that Mentzer will be released mid-season. An ignominious end to the career of the "greatest" Pennsauken QB ever.

The Houston/Pennsauken billyvan era all time starting QB ratings:

1. Jonathan Mentzer - 24,000 yards, 139 TDs, 80 QB rating
2. Clifford Harshaw - 3300 yards, 13 TDs, 11 INTs, 75 QB rating
3. Eddy Orcutt - 1400 yards, 9 TDs, 7 INTs, 78 QB rating
4. Brian Teeple - 337 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT, 101 QB rating
5. David Bender - 6000 yards, 32 TDs, 39 INTs, 73 QB rating
6. Joseph Kelley - 1700 yards, 7 TD, 9 INTs, 70 QB rating
7. Robin Arroyo - 2600 yards, 6 TDs, 16 INTs, 65 QB rating
8. Brian Harris - 745 yards, 2 TDs, 5 INTs, 55 QB rating
9. Todd Sather - 428 yards, 0 TDs, 7 INTs, 35 QB rating
10. John Heidel - 336 yards, 2 TDs, 7 INTs, 34 QB rating
11. Stephen Doyle - 932 yards, 1 TD, 13 INTs 28 QB rating
12. Warren Gage (WR) - 0 yards, 0 TDs, 10 INT, 0 rating.

And TBD Daniel McCrea, 220 yards, 4 TDs, 25 INTs, 48 QB rating.

10 seasons, 13 starting QBs. And yes, Jonathan Mentzer will go down for Pennsauken fans as the "GOAT"! And which also is very sad. But don't worry, QB "expert" billy has it all figured out!

For comparison, the Arkansas Thrashers last 10 years starting QB rankings:

1. John Spartan

"no great qb no team winning games" - billyvan

Is this quote accurate? We have 20 years of data to evaluate! Do you need an awesome QB to win? Let's take a look at the Super Bowl winning QBs:

2017-2019: Owen Barrett - He is a hall of famer for winning three titles in a row. And he still has the top QB rating of all time. But he was a rank 60s player drafted in the 18th round of the dispersal draft, that was aided by having hall of fame talent all around him. Still I guess being a hall of famer means that by definition, you are a good QB.

2020: Timothy Thompson - Another hall of famer. And a high pick. He was a first rounder in the dispersal draft. He would be the poster boy for "great QB means wins" - a high first rounder who won it all.

2021: Patrick Spinner - Another hall of famer. Seems like billy's thesis is holding up so far. Of course, Spinner was another low rater player by the default ranks, a 15th round pick, supported by hall of fame players.

2022: Edward Fink - the Trent Dilfer of Super Bowl QBs? He rode an awesome Colts defense to victory. He was only in the league 4 seasons. 80 TDs vs. 57 INTs wasn't terrible, but could not find a job anywhere. He was a former first round pick though! But here's one mediocre QB winning it all.

2023: Michael Patel - A fourth rounder who somehow had his greatest game at the right moment. He only started five years and then hung around as a backup for several more season. Still, the numbers looked good: 118 TDs, 52 INTs, 92 QB rating. 70s level player, someone you could win with.

2024: Charles Reese - An 8th rounder in the dispersal draft. A rank 70s guy. 13 years in the league, 8 as a starter. 221 TDs, 94 QB rating, signed as a free agent off the street. You can find Super Bowl winning QBs off free agency!

2025: Richard Williams - another hall of famer. But also: a 70s ranked guy in the drafted in the 14th round of the dispersal draft. He signed as a free agent off the street after being let go by Atlanta.

2026, 2027, 2030: John Spartan - He's a future hall of famer, but was just a 3rd round pick and ranked in the 80s for default ratings. But obviously a top talent at QB.

2028: Christopher Hernandez - He's probably a hall of famer, but just a 4th round pick and rank 70s guy by default ratings.

2029: Neil Kleinschmidt - A sixth round pick of the Bears, he signed a minimum deal with Charlotte and somehow had 5 years starting then vanished. 126 TDs and 87 QB rating.

2031: Ernest Williams - A second round pick and mid-80s level talent. He's put up MVP level numbers so far in his career.

2032: Joseph Kelley - A third round pick that the OrangeCrush signed off free agents. He has a few MVP level years and then flamed out.

2033: Brian Roberts - A fourth round pick that the Dildozers signed off free agents.
So total breakdown: started for 10 years, had an MVP season, mid 80s rating.

2034: Randall Prosperie - A 1st rounder traded to Seattle. He has a default rating of 87.

2035: Kenneth Rainey - A third round pick, traded to the Demons, with now high 80s default rating. He's had an MVP season.

Blue chip QB (80+ rating, high draft pick): 2 (Prosperie and Thompson)
High Rating QB (80+ rating): 5 (Rainey, Roberts, Williams, Kelley, Spartan)
Average stat QB (70s and below rating): 8

Hall of Fame level QBs: 6
Non-Hall of Fame level QBs: 4
Career not over/too early to call: 5

Drafted: 7
Free agent: 5
Trade: 3

So it looks like the classic "blue chip" QB prospect isn't the biggest winner. The Peyton Manning types have won only two Super Bowls. Do high ratings help? Seems like not necessarily. Only 7 out of the 15 Super Bowl winners were 80+ default rankings. The draft seems to be the best way to get your QB, but 5 were just dragged off the free agent street and three via trade. So getting a super star, high draft pick, high rating QB might not equal wins. Seems like the support systems play a huge role and coaching. 8 of the 15 Super Bowl winners did it for teams that didn't draft them! Also interesting to note that other than Spartan and Barrett, there are no other repeat Super Bowl champion QBs.

The way of the QB position in MFN. Great work on the reviews Admiral, there's a lot to be learned and gained from that info.
