Another season in the books, and the offensive records continue to be a reality in the league. At this rate, who knows what kind of numbers next season will bring. This is beyond any video game and pinball machine analogy, and just amazing. Let's run down this year's individual performers:
On defense, Phillip Turner (NYG) did it again, leading the league in sacks and hurries and establishing himself as the league's number one pass rusher.
Charles Johnson (KC) led the league with 10 INTs.
Scott Cosper (SF) had a 2000 yard rushing season, with 14 TDs, again showing off his skills as the top RB.
Quarterbacks set new highs, once again, making the accomplishments of Brian Teeple and Owen Barrett sound like old news. Christopher Redman (BUF) had a record 8.823 yards passing. Chuck Farr (CLT) had the highest single season QB rating ever at 140.35. And in any other season, Richard Williams throwing for 8500 yards with 82 TDs would have been an easy MVP choice.
But this is no normal season. This season we witnessed something we have never seen before. Complete domination of defenses... by a tight end! Playing out of position, WR William Marquis (NYG) torched opposing defenses for a record 3,379 yards and 36 TDs on 104 catches. For comparison, no NFL receiver has ever eclipsed 2,000 yards. Ronald Agular had 2,666 yards in a season for the Red Dragon one season and that's the closest we have seen. 3000 yards is just too much to fathom. It shows that Richard Williams wasn't doing it all - take away Marquis and his numbers are probably far worse than Farr's. He was the linchpin to the offense. We might not ever see a 3000 yard season ever again, so it was historic. And that is what makes
William Marquis, WR, NYG, our 2021 league MVP.
